Next quilt will call for various yellows and I once again chose batiks. I’ll be doing a flower and I love the way these fabrics will (should) work.

Such a joy to see a box on the front porch that wasn’t an Amazon box! It was a box full of quilt goodness from Elaine in Missouri. She sent a full quilt top for Hospice.  This is such a happy quilt. I especially love the green that peeks out among the cheerful oranges.  This donation could very well go to a male patient. Most quilt tops seem to be more appropriate for female patients so this is a total win. This flimsy is now hanging with four other Hospice flimsies. I’m guessing this will be the first of those to get quilted and bound.

IMG_2246

And that wasn’t all!  There were all these fabric pieces.  No doubt our little group will put these to very good use.

How exciting to see all these little blocks! Most definitely a future leader-ender project . Admittedly, I am so tempted to play with them, pin them and set them up by my sewing machine. But…I’m trying to be disciplied to continue working on my present project/s. Ha! Let’s see how long I last!

So many cut off corners from my Tula Strings quilt just begging to be used for their own quilt. I have been wanting to do a quilt of all flying geese for some time – perfect opportunity! First, there was all the trimming of the triangles. The adding of the solids was done while at a sew-in with friends – it took forever! The final trimming of the blocks seemed to take more than forever.  There was a lot of arranging on the design wall, rearranging, and yes, rearranging some more. The blocks occupied the design wall for at least a couple of weeks.

There were some of the flying geese leftover and they were NOT going into the orphan block container. The backing was the best place for them and it made for a more interesting backing.

A Surprise Visitor

The ferns are amazing and there are two large patches, one in the back garden and one out front. The daylillies have set so many blooms. Last year they were such a disappointment that I thought I’d be digging them out this year. They redeemed themselves!

The hostas have been pretty happy too. In the past I’ve lost many a hosta plant to voles, but thankfully, the two outdoor cats have minimized that problem. Not and then there’s a bite from a slug, but they’re easily dealt with. After I pour my morning coffee, I like to take a quick stroll out front to enjoy the garden. Last week I got quite the shock – somewhat heartbreaking really. Several of my hostas had been eaten  leaving only bits of the stems. There were also hoof prints throughout. The culprit? A deer! Sure enough, hubby had captured the image on our surveilance cameras.

After much research, I mixed up two concoctions to spray onto the plants. One was made with eggs, garlic, oil, milk and water. Yummy.  The second was with fresh habanero peppers that were liquified in the blender, milk and water. If I make the second mixture again, it will be done outside. The peppers caused me to gag so I quickly put on my Covid mask and all was fine!

Elephant Ear bloom – on three Elephant Ear plants!

The plants were all sprinkled with Cayenne pepper the first night. The second night I sprayed with the habanero mixture. Rain was in the forecast so I covered the large hostas with bird netting. After two visits, the deer has not returned. I’m very hopeful, but I’m not letting my guard down. I will also be using a commercial mixture that is supposed to be rain resistant.

There have been questions regarding how I made the Tula Strings blocks and border. Unfortunately, I’m not very good at keeping notes and drawings, so I will do my best to recreate the pattern. First, I laid out the various colors of shot cottons from my stash, then pulled out coordinating Tula prints. One and one half inch strips were cut – solids and prints.

img_0062 The strips were paper pieced onto a 10 1/2″ square of paper, beginning with a solid strip in the center. Was the paper necessary?  For me it was because the shot cottons definitely lend themselves to wonky sewn strips. And there was starch – quite a bit of starch! It was also pleasing that when pieced, the seams matched pretty darn close to perfect!

Tula base

A 6 1/2″ inch square was then cut on point from each block of strips.

Tula base 2 After much arranging and sewing together the blocks, a border was most definitely needed.  The leftover corners were cut into triangles, then solids added to make flying geese.

Tula Strings was now a quilt!

The prints are all out of print Tula Pink and a few were used  in more than one colorway.

Tula Prings

There were many, many triangle cuts that have been made into a quilt. Stay tuned for an upcoming post!

At last! This quilt was a fair amount of prep, much sewing and now it’s done! What’s even better – I love it! The solids are all shot cottons and the prints are various Tula Pink prints, all of which are now out of print and many considered rare. I was originally inspired to do this quilt by one done by Quilt Diva Julie that she calls 无限制访问国外的浏览器. I posted about this quilts beginning here.

There are playful blocks!  See the racoon’s eyes peeking out?

And one of my favorites – Prince Charming!

Tula Pink fans could play I Spy with this quilt! This quilt had its beginning in September, 2023.  I’m feeling rather accomplished that it’s complete in June of 2023!

A Quilt for the Graduate

This just doesn’t seem possible – my great niece has graduated high school! She is such a sweet, lovely and talented young lady so I wanted to commemorate this great occasion with a quilt (what else?!) AND…another 什么浏览器可伍打开国外网站 completed!

The weather hasn’t exactly cooperated for pictures lately.  Lots of rain and then major sunshine.  This was my only window to take a pic, although a little too sunny. The closeup shows the colors a little better and the pretty quilt pattern the long armer used.

This spring has been a happy time for my very shady garden.  The hydrangeas have been bursting and the mini hostas have formed a carpet with their cute bloom stalks.  The ferns have also formed a carpet – such joy!

Batiks, B&W’s!

The batik scrap bin overflows! I have been wanting to do another batik scrappy, and decided to mix them with black and white fabrics.  Such a fun combination that was a joy to put together.  Admittedly, the black and white bin was not as full as anticipated and yardage was purchased for the borders and binding.  Still, the fabrics used in this quilt were mostly from scrap stash which makes it a win!

I worked on this quilt while quilting with friends at the family farm of one this past December.  It was such a special time of conversing, laughing, being amazed at their talents, good food and we were even treated to a bit of a snowfall one evening!

The quilt top did not get completed at our sew-in as the fabric I brought for the borders just did not work.  It can be so helpful to have the eyes and input from other quilters.  I knew immediately they were right in their assessment, so it waited until I got home.

Batik 2

I really like the backing I used – a funky print and a bright solid.  The overall quilting pattern used by my longarmer goes perfectly with the quilt top.

Another finish.  Another empty project box – Yeah! And, I’m holding true to my goal for 2023: “No new projects until I am down to five project boxes.”  It’s going to be a while…will I be able to do it??

Happy New Home Quilt

Whew! The past two weeks have been mostly spent outdoors – in the garden and doing some much needed power washing. The temps had not yet reached the 80’s so it was perfect. Now I’m out there by 7 AM and in by 10 AM.  It’s hot, humid and icky for outside work! I am, however, enjoying the fruits of my labor. Thanks to excellent spring rains, all is lush and there’s some pretty color.

I did manage to come inside to bind a quilt that I recently got back from my longarmer. My cousin from Long Island, New York, and her hubby, looked far and wide for their forever retirement home.  They chose NC just 20 minutes from me! They are in a retirement community and love their choice and I am just so happy for them. What better way to welcome them than with a quilt.

It is super scrappy! Even the binding is scrappy.  They can put this quilt anywhere and it will go with their colors! The blocks were string sewn into squares then cut for half square triangles. Having used them in the border, I was left with only bits which makes me very happy!

There are a couple of more bindings waiting for me.       I do love finishes!

When making these blocks, there are leftover cuts. After some playing, I put them together to make this cute mini.  I don’t have a red, white and blue quilt of my own, so I decided a mini would be perfect to put out on a table in July. And here it is – my little mini. Pieced, quilted and bound in one day – Woo Hoo!!  I love the blocks and how they went together!

It has been a beautiful spring here in the Piedmont of NC – sun, rain, and not too hot. Much of my time is being spent in the garden, so….I will be taking a break for a couple of weeks and am looking forward to returning with lots of quilting excitement!
